I have personally been building blogs for only a few months, but have already achieved good search engine rankings for a number of important keywords that I have targeted.

Frankly, the good results surprised me. But I probably should not have been surprised because I simply followed the advice of one of my Internet mentors and performed certain actions.

Some of these actions included posting to blogs with sensible comments (not spamming) and including one of my main urls as part of my signature.

Another thing I have done is to make sure that I include my targeted keywords in my blog post headlines whenever possible.

I also treat each blog post as an individual web page, which in fact they are. By treating each post with the care of a web page it helps me discipline myself, so that I am doing more than just rambling and keeping an "online diary."

If you are just starting on your journey to making extra cash on the Internet, affiliate programs (sometimes called associate or referral programs) can be a good place to start.

If you work them effectively, they can provide the extra money you want. Many people have successful home businesses selling affiliate products and services. Best of all it's not rocket science. But, be prepared to work at it. Despite what you may hear, there is no quick or easy road to riches on the Internet.

Here are some of the basics on how affiliate programs generally work:

(1) You sign up as an affiliate with a company (merchant, vendor) whose products or services you want to sell. This might be traditional books, electronic books, software, wellness products, pet products, CDs, DVDs, -- you get the idea. Anything you are interested in selling.

(1a) Before you sign up, or rather as part of the signing up proceedure, you often are asked to agree to certain terms and conditions in your affiliate agreement. Nothing to be afraid of!

(2) After you sign up, you will receive an affiliate code (or unique url) or a number of them for the various products or services your merchant offers

(3) When you build you website or blog, you will build content relating in some contextual way to the products or services that are sold by the company you are affiliated with. It might be pet products, for example. So, your website or blog will have content related in some way to pets.

(4) There are other ways to sell as an affiliate without having a website which we will discuss in another installment.)

(5) On your website, you will insert your affiliate link(s) at some point with your content. The link-words will be something that encourages the site visitor to click through for more information, or to click through to buy the product. The link-words might be "I want more details" or "find out more here."

(6) The link on your site connects to the merchant's website with your unique identification.

(7) When the visitor on your site clicks on to one of these links, they are sent through the link to the merchant's site -- generally to the specific product or service that you were talking about on your site. In the case of pet products, it might be a book on training, or a special diet supplement.

(8) The merchant's site then looks after the sales transaction and ships the product to the customer. And the merchant handles all of the customer relations. You job is simply to refer your site visitors to the merchant through your link/unique url which tells the merchant that you and your individual affiliate code number are responsible for the sale.

(9) You get a commission on that sale, the amount depending on the Terms and Agreement you have with your affiliate company product and services provider.

Note: With some affiliate programs, you are encouraged to recruit other people to join the program. You can do this with a link using link-words such as Join this Profitable Team, or You too can Make Money with These Products. Anyone who joins through your link then generally becomes part of your downline, or team.

Under this concept, you generally get a commission on the products sold by your team, although at a lower rate than the individual sales that you personally create. Under this type of tier system you are generally expected to provide some degree of guidance to the team members under you.
